Mmm, Tastes Like...Rusty Nails???

Jack had an appointment with the pediatrician on Friday. He was as burly as ever: 24 lbs, 10 oz (96th percentile), 29.5 inches long (90th percentile) and head circumference was 97th percentile. He is doing great. The pediatrician said all of the things we were watching because of his prematurity have resolved and he's developmentally on track for the nine month old man he almost is. It's routine at 9 months to have a hemoglobin level drawn, so we headed to the lab after our visit. Jack was a trooper. While Meredith and Daddy waited in the waiting room (and hit every drinking fountain Mere could find), Jack and I went for the blood draw. In addition to the phlebotomist and me, there were two other techs who decided they needed to tickle his legs and talk to him during the procedure. He was one happy man! Unfortunately, after we got home, the office called to tell us that Jack is anemic. Turns out that preemies don't build up the same iron stores as full term kids. When you couple that with his rapid growth, it's no wonder he's a little low. The good news: this is very fixable. The bad news: iron tastes like crap. Jack threw up the first two doses when he had them straight out of the bottle, so it looks like we're going to need to get creative. Breakfast this morning was a half success. We hid the iron in some fruit like the doctor recommended. Guess what? Still tastes like crap. If anyone has any suggestions on how to hide that iron taste while still getting the same level of iron-y goodness, I'm all ears!
